Kalisch Lab. Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research

5 / Validation of positive appraisal style scales

2021-2022

Validation of the perceived Positive Appraisal Style Scale, content-focused and perceived Positive Appraisal Style Scale, process-focused. Both should be used to assess general tendencies in stressor appraisal in large scale studies.

We operationalise resilience as the individual deviation to the normative stressor reactivity, in order to understand not just mental health symptoms, but to capture reactivity to adversity, of which healthcare workers experienced a lot during the pandemic. Using this outcome-based resilience we identify 2 important resilience factors that are actionable on the organisation level: support from colleagues and trust in the workplace. On an individual level self-perceived ability to bounce back after adversity was prospectively associated with actual stressor reactivity.

Primary analyses of the stepped-care interventino programme comprised of the WHO interventions: Doing what matters (DWM) and Problem Management Plus (PM+).
We find that mental health symptoms indicated by PHQ-ADS are significantly reduced in the intervention group (baseline-adjusted difference 4.4, 95% CI 2.1 to 6.7; standardised effect size 0.8, 95% CI 0.4 to 1.2).

We present two self-report scales that measure positive appraisal style, or the general tendency to evaluate adverse situations (stressors) in a positive light. The first scale asks about positive thinking processes people may employ when confronted with stressors, the second about positive results of these processes, that is, positive appraisals people may generate in such situations. The scales shall help test whether typically appraising stressors positively promotes resilience to the development of stress-related mental health problems.

From Abstract: "Based on the most commonly reported high-quality research findings we propose that the hallmarks of exposure to child maltreatment are: Increased risk of psychopathology; Increased risk of obesity; Increased risk of high- risk sexual behaviours, Increased risk of smoking; and Increased risk of child maltreatment in children with disabilities. Research gaps include a lack of focus on complexity and resilience. Little can be concluded about directions of causality or mechanisms. Adequately powered prospective studies are required to move the field forward."

my name

how to cite and pronounce my name:
Papoula Petri-Romão

Always cite my name as Petri-Romão, P.

I have two surnames, so no other version of my name is correct.

My first name (Papoula) is pronounced as if there was no 'u'. It should resemble the words 'granola' or 'cola'. In other words, it's like pah-POH-lah, not pah-pooh-lah (for example, like the word shampoo).

Petri is pronounced like the Petri dish and Romao is pronouned ro-MAO (it should rhyme with now).

Full Name: pah-POH-lah pe-tree ro-MAO

I am always happy to help :)
